"An elephant never forgets"—but for Ishi, memory is both a sanctuary and a burden.
In this sweeping, cinematic novel, Alex Lasker invites readers into the mind of Ishi, an African elephant whose life spans decades of triumph, heartbreak, and the shifting tides of the savanna.
After a brutal act of poaching shatters his herd, Ishi is rescued and raised by a human family, forming an unbreakable bond with a young boy named Suem. But the call of the wild is powerful, and Ishi eventually returns to the bush to lead a life of his own. Now, as an old "tusker" nearing the end of his days, Ishi embarks on one final, monumental trek across the continent to find the people he once loved and reconcile the pieces of his past.
The Memory of an Elephant is a deeply moving exploration of:
Part epic adventure and part heartbreaking tribute, this novel is a testament to the enduring power of loyalty. You’ll never look at these majestic creatures the same way again.
★★★★★ "The "Memory of an Elephant" is a multi level narrative word crafted by a master storyteller in flexible timelines with crossover sentient communications. Once I accepted this basic premise, the book was a poignant, compelling read and hard to put down. Struck some chords that I was surprised it reached and I was surprisingly emotional throughout. Thoroughly enjoyable and I would highly recommend it for anyone who is fond of elephants or loves the frailties and nobleness of our species. I will buy this book as a gift for friends."
★★★★★ "Fascinating! Written as a novel, yet includes perspectives and observations from the POV of the elephant, all believable based on what we know to be true of elephants. A most enjoyable read, yet deeply emotional, because of our human incessant need to satisfy our often thoughtless desires at the expense of creation."
★★★★★ "Beautiful book. Having been to Africa this last year, the depictions of poaching for just ivory is so sickening, but the memories of "Ishi" the elephant are enthralling. You need both to understand how prevalent the slaughter is and that so much more needs to be done to protect wildlife. The story is lovingly and poetically written through the eyes of the elephant. The human's stories are a little more stereotypical, but when they intertwine with the elephant, it is all emotionally moving. A definite must read. I have checked a few city library systems...not sure why this is not in their systems, but it should be!!!! Would also make a great book club book, so much discussion potential!!"
